Our first look at the new Metal Gear Online will happen next week at The Game Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada, host Geoff Keighley announced on Twitter today. Series creator Hideo Kojima will be there to "world premiere Metal Gear Online," Keighley said.
The original Metal Gear Online was part of PlayStation 3 game Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and was sold as a separate standalone game in Japan. It featured online multiplayer for up to 16 players across a variety of modes that included deathmatch, team stealth, capture and rescue. Metal Gear Online service was terminated in June 2012.
The new Metal Gear Online will apparently be the online multiplayer component of next year's Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. In an interview with CVG earlier this year, Kojima said that the online game will be paired with Snake's next big adventure.
"Multiplayer right now is being created at our LA studio as well as us," Kojima said at the time. "We're working closely to create a vast multiplayer for all the fans."
The Game Awards 2014 will take place Friday, Nov. 5 and will be streamed live across a variety of platforms, including PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Wii U, Steam, YouTube, Twitch and more. For more on the show, read Polygon's interview with host Geoff Keighley.
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain was first unveiled at the Spike TV VGAs, also hosted by Keighley, two years ago. It was announced under the name The Phantom Pain by Moby Dick Studios, and later revealed to be a Metal Gear game that would be delivered in two parts.
