For months now we’ve been chasing down a rumor that Microsoft plans to release a collection of Rare games for Xbox One this summer to mark the storied company’s 30th anniversary. Today, a Kotaku reader sent over a retail image that seems to corroborate this rumor

.

What we’ve heard is that the collection could feature up to 30 games including beloved Rare classics like Battletoads (NES), Jet Force Gemini (N64), and Banjo Kazooie (N64), according to a person who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the upcoming game.

 It’s unlikely we’ll see old Rare games whose licenses are owned by other companies—don’t expect Donkey Kong Country or Goldeneye here—but other names mentioned by various sources include Kameo (360), Perfect Dark (N64/360), and Blast Corps (N64), which will come as pleasant news to anyone looking for a way to replay those old games on modern systems.

This isn’t the only project Rare is working on—the iconic studio is also developing an original new game that’s currently “very, very early,” according to a source. That’s presumably the “uniquely Rare game” that Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased on Twitter last fall.

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer spoke with China’s Gamecore during ChinaJoy convention this past week. In the interview he stated that moving forward, Xbox’s strategy is revolving around into investing on their first party line-up and signing fewer third party content deals.

 

This has been highlighted heavily this year; Sony has taken the Call of Duty DLC agreement for Black Ops 3, and at E3, Microsoft did not focus heavily on third party titles coming to Xbox One. Xbox has been highlighting their fall line-up as ‘the greatest games lineup in Xbox history,’ as the company now starts to focus on their first party titles.

 

My Strategy is more around our own first party franchises, and investing in franchises that we own, and probably fewer exclusive deals for third party content. I want to have strong third party relations, but paying for many third party exclusives isn’t our long term strategy.

 

 

 

They’re launching Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, Forza 6, Tomb Raider (console exclusive this year only, coming to PS4 holiday 2016), and more, and with that, they’re transitioning their focus to those titles, rather than relying on signing third party deals.

Spencer stated that their continued focus on their first party line up will be highlighted at gamescom next week; Xbox’s conference takes place Tuesday, August 4th at 10AM EST. We will be covering the conference on @CIGamingNews on Twitter and all Halo 5 news on @HaloINTEL.

 

 

 

This year, the fact that we’re shipping Halo 5, Gears of War, Forza 6, Fable, we can only do that and build that best line-up we’ve ever seen really on the back of franchises that we own. It’s great to have Tomb Raider as part of our line-up, but investing in first party, you’ll see more of that at gamescom next week, is really core to our strategy.

If you own an Xbox One and you're a fan of Blizzard games, you're in for a treat. Microsoft has teamed up with Blizzard to offer a live stream of BlizzCon 2015 on the Xbox One starting Friday, November 6. From the Major Nelson blog:

 

For the first time ever, fans not attending BlizzCon 2015 in person can watch the Opening Ceremony streaming LIVE on their Xbox One via the Xbox Live Events interactive (XLEi) app starting Friday, November 6. (Details coming soon.)

 

Those details are where it gets interesting, as Blizzard usually requires the purchase of a "Virtual Ticket" to live stream the event. It's unclear if that will be required to watch on your Xbox One, but we'll know much more soon. Additionally, Xbox's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb says he'll be giving away five tickets to the event.
